Decoupage meets denim pretty much describes what designer Megan Pyrah can do with three weeks, a new or fits-like-a-glove pair of jeans, and some beautiful fabrics of varying colors, textures and shapes. Whether designed around a requested theme or her own creative whim, Pyrah sews each piece of luxurious fabric to the jeans to create her trademark mosaic effect. For a little dramatic flare in the front, the design extends up the calf of one leg; the knee of the other. For a full on dramatic flame, the backside of one lucky leg is detailed all the way up to the derrière.
In true blue jean tradition, the “Shaggy Mosaic” jeans can be dressed up with a silk blouse and heels or dressed down with a t-shirt and flats. Adding to their versatility, the multi-colored fabrics that make up the mosaic present many mix and match opportunities when it comes to tops and accessories. Since they are made-to-order, pricing varies, but starts around $125 per pair.
So where did this “children’s” designer find her inspiration to expand her line? It was a pretty straightforward case of give the people -- or rather parents -- what they ask for. “A lot of the moms who were ordering from our children’s line wanted to know if I ever did women’s jeans. That got me to thinking. Then I saw the Oprah Winfrey’s Jeans revolution show, the one where she’s on a quest to get moms out of bad jeans. It just really brought home the fact that everyone wears jeans. And everyone pretty much wears them the same way. To me, a great pair of jeans not only loves your curves, but loves attention ... pops! A good pair of jeans can take you from mommy to mama. But why not shoot for the moon? Why not hot mama?!’”
