Mentors Make a Positive Difference for Young, At-Risk Moms Study Shows Befriender Program Participants Improve Parenting Skills
ST. PAUL, Minn. (PRWeb) January 19, 2007 -- Parenting can be a challenge, especially for young mothers without support, encouragement or a positive parenting role-model. Children's Home Society & Family Services' Befriender service matches young, at-risk moms with a mentor to help them become better, more confident parents. The ideal mentor is a seasoned mom with experience as a young or single parent. Relationship-based support groups, coaching and planned activities help build the relationship between the pair.
A study of the program shows few reoccurrences of unplanned pregnancies and participants repeatedly report more self-confidence, better parenting skills and more control over their lives. One Befriender participant said, "Having a role model who shared her experiences in parenting and offered support and guidance has increased my self worth and has made me realize that I can accomplish a lot in life."
Children's Home Society & Family Services is looking for women who would like to offer caring support and mentorship to a young woman who is parenting. Upcoming training for Befriender volunteers will take place on Saturday, February 10, 2007, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 2230 Como Avenue, St. Paul, 55108.
